Literacy Statement

We teach pupils to read using a variety of strategies and techniques but at the heart of our approach is the ‘Letter and Sounds’ phonic programme.  “Letters and Sounds” provides pupils with the building blocks they need to read and write.  The main reading scheme we use is Oxford Reading Tree, supplemented by a range of quality reading schemes and ‘real’ books which have been carefully selected by our experienced teaching team.

 

All children are provided with appropriately levelled individual reading books to take home which parents are encouraged to share with them.  Children are given regular opportunities to change their reading books in school time.  Children also take part in weekly guided reading sessions where the skills of reading are explicitly taught.  They are set tasks to be carried out at home to reinforce these skills.  They are provided with a guided reading homework book to record this in.  Parents are encouraged to support their children with this weekly reading homework.
